Winter is FINALLY over and we are kicking off the summer CMBC schedule on May 11th at 2:00 pm from the Schwatka Lake Boat Launch. This “Welcome to Your Backyard” event will be for mountain bikes and trail runners. Both runners and bikers will have a scavenger hunt course through the dry trails of Schwatka Lake before returning to the Boat Launch for a BBQ. The City of Whitehorse will be there to talk about trail maintenance and we’ll have updated schedules of future events for both the Trail Running and UltraRunning Association of the Yukon and the Contagious Mountain Bike Club.

Bikers will require memberships to participate and $5 will get you a burger and entry into the Scavenger Hunt.

Whether you want to race fast, or just have fun – this is the place to kick off the summer.

Memberships, get your cmbc memberships here!

Thanks to some diligent work by your board (and in particular, multi-tool extraordinaire Evan) we are excited to offer the ability to purchase membership and insurance online this year. The registration site can be found at: https://reg.ccnbikes.com/cycling-license Click on the Cycling Association of Yukon for all Yukon insurance and club membership options.

CMBC, Velonorth, U Kon Echelon and CAY have all moved to this single online registration system which is provided by CCN, operated out of North Vancouver. CMBC will be using CCN for event registration for some of our larger events such as the 24 Hours of Light.

Here’s how it works:

Membership/Insurance
The vast majority of you will be purchasing a cmbc membership ($15) and CAY insurance ($35).

You must first create a CCN profile. Once a profile is created, you can add memberships and insurance to the cart for purchase. It is important that your profile is created with correct information as pricing for memberships and UCI licenses is controlled by the age you enter (e.g. under 17’s, youth pricing for memberships).

Most memberships require insurance, some do not; the system will enforce the rules appropriately. You can also choose to only purchase insurance from CAY or UCI if desired. Also, you can purchase different memberships at different times so if you aren’t sure yet if you want to join Velonorth, for example, you can come back to your profile and add that membership at a later date.

It is important to note that CAY insurance/membership and UCI licenses are ONLY available for purchase online. CAY will not accept any other form of registration.

Waivers
Once you have selected your licenses/membership to purchase you will be required to sign the standard CAY waiver. This online waiver replaces the need for paper waivers for those over age 18. However, all youth are required to sign a paper waiver with its associated parental consent form. These paper waivers can be given to a cmbc board member at any event.

Mailing Lists
You will then be presented options to opt-into mailing lists for Velonorth and CMBC if those memberships were purchased. Even if you have already signed up for the mailing list via this website, you may still want to tick the “yes” box for emails during registration. We know that some people have been experiencing some difficulties with receiving emails from the website sign up list. We’re working on a fix.

Payment
First, a word about the price to be a full cmbc member. You will have noticed that it will cost you $50 total, not $40 as in years past. Cycling Canada insurance costs increased significantly this year and so did CMBC’s share of those costs. We still have BY FAR the lowest rates in Canada for UCI licenses and general insurance and the membership cost has remained the same: $15. We work hard to bring you good value for your hard earned dollars and we offer some good stuff in exchange: fun events, races, discounts at local businesses, and trail advocacy/maintenance in Whitehorse. In short: please don’t bitch about the cost. It’s not like we are pocketing your dough.

The final registration screen confirms all the products being purchased and the associated costs. For 2013, CAY is covering the transaction costs of using CCN. In future years these fees will either have to be absorbed by the cycling organization or passed onto the registrant.

If you need help, contact cmbc at info@cmbcyukon.ca

EDITED APRIL 25: Since the weather is looking pretty awful for Saturday, this event has been postponed to next Saturday, May 4. All other details remain the same.

Due to Sooner or later, all this snow is going to melt. That means it’s almost time for mountain bike season to start. Our first event of the 2013 season is a Bike Garage Sale. This will be happening at Icycle Sport from 11:00am-1:00pm on Saturday April 27th.

Photo: Kiki Hood – http://flic.kr/p/qSfah

Similar to last year, people are invited to bring their bike gear to the Icycle Sport parking lot (9002 Quartz Rd) between 11:00am-1:00pm to sell.

If you have a bicycle you’d like to sell, but can not be at Icycle for the day, you can drop it off with a CMBC board member between 10:30am-11:00am at Icycle Sport and it will be placed on the floor for you. This will be done at your own risk and it must be picked up by 1:30 pm, or it will be donated to a local organization.

If you are interested in selling bike gear (parts, trainers, speedometers, tires, wheels, etc…) you will need to stay with your gear. We will have tables that can be used for set up.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to CMBC for 2013 events. We ask for 10% of the final sale price of full bikes and $10 for table space to sell your own miscellaneous items.

CMBC is excited to announce that we are moving to an electronic registration system for club membership this year and that will be ready to go at the swap. Come down, sign up for the season and find out what awesome events we have planned.

CMBC is happy to announce a new partnership with the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club and the City of Whitehorse to open up Snowbike Trails with-in the Mt. MacIntyre area.

In order to make this partnership a success we are asking everyone to follow the guidelines:

All riders must be a member of the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club (WCCSC), or the Contagious Mountain Bike Club (CMBC). If you are not a member of either organization, please purchase a day pass from the WCCSC Ski Base.

If you would like to use the MT. McIntyre Recreational Center and its amenities (including sauna, washrooms, etc…) please purchase a day pass OR be a member of WCCSC.

Purpose built snow bikes only! Both tires must be wider than 3.7”. Absolutely no regular mountain bikes.

Snowbikes should yield to skiers at all crossings.

Stay on Snowbike designated trails. DO NOT ride on any ski trails. Ski trails should only be crossed in order to access singletrack.

Singletrack trails are located in a non-dog area of the WCCSC. Please do not bring your dog snowbiking at Mt. McIntyre. If you have a dog, we recommend using the Copper Ridge Ridge Trail, Quickie, or Grey Mountain trails.

When crossing ski trails, stay on your bike. Do not walk across ski trails, this will leave punctures. Do not stop on ski trails. If you are waiting for colleagues, please wait on the singletrack.

All trails are bi-directional. Keep your eyes and ears open for users that may be travelling towards you.

If you are leaving a rut deeper than an inch, having a hard time riding in a straight line, or pushing your bike, the snow is too soft and you absolutely should not be biking on the trails.

Be an ambassador for the sport – stay polite, educate other bikers, discourage bad behavior, follow the rules, and we’ll all have a good time this winter.

To Access Trails:

Start in the Dirt Park

Climb up through the Dirt Park

Turn RIGHT on Olympic, stay on the OUTSIDE of the ski tracks.

Look to your LEFT there is a singletrack that cuts past the stunts. Cross onto that singletrack

Climb towards the 5 km (you will be parallel to Nighthawk)

Cross the 5 km

Climb on either singletrack (left is more gradual than right)

Cross the 7.5 km

Continue on any of the many options with-in this area of trails, including Lower/Upper Rocky Canyon, Lichen It, etc.

You can stay on any trail, but do NOT cross or ride on any other ski trails.

Access to/from Collective:

If you are accessing Collective, please use EXTREME CAUTION due to Bridge

When entering Collective, cross the 7.5 km Trail. Stay on the OUTSIDE of the ski trails and go directly to the Collective entrance.

When exiting Collective, say on the OUTSIDE of the ski trails, and cross the 7.5 km Trail at the Rocky Canyon entrance.
