Everyone here is getting excited for another summer of great riding. We are eager to get out there and brave souls have been riding for a few weeks now (on dirt, that is!). This is a little update on one of the many benefits of becoming a member with CMBC.

Throughout the summer, CMBC offers group rides, a twoonie race series and women-only group rides. The benefit of joining these rides is that you ride new trails, meet like-minded people, receive encouragement to try new moves or just to hang out with friends for a great ride.

This year we changed the days for the rides. The CMBC group rides are now on Tuesdays, alternating with the Twoonie Races. The Dirt Girls rides have moved to Thursdays. You can find the dates for all events in our calendar. When you click on the date you will find information on who is leading the ride, time, and ability level.

The format for Dirt Girls remains the same in that there is an easier group and a more challenging group. This year both Dirt Girl rides start in the same place. Please check the calendar for details.

Ride on!

We are honoured to have Grant Owen back to run his amazing clinic once again. We’ve made some minor changes to the format, but the fun and excellent instruction are back for another year.

This clinic is for beginners and people who have been riding for awhile but would like some help mastering some of the more basic skills.

It is open to CMBC members only, age 16 or older. (We are working to get online membership registration set up so stay tuned on that front.)

Cost will be $10 per person for the six-week clinic.

When: first session is Monday, May 14 at 6:30pm, then every Monday after that until June 18
Where: meet on the grass in front of the S.S. Klondike
Bring: bike, helmet, gloves (if you have them), $10, proof of CMBC membership (you should hopefully have it by then) and a sense of adventure

See you there!

On May 13, CMBC will be kicking off its season with a fun event at the Schwatka Lake Boat Launch. In the past, this has been our annual Poker Ride. This year, we are skipping the paperwork, and having a non-gambling event co-hosted with Yukon Orienteering, as part of National Orienteering Week.

This is the perfect event for serious and recreational riders. If you are looking to challenge yourself, Yukon Orienteering’s timing system will give splits times for Mountain Kings and Dowhill Experts. For those looking for more fun, there will be a great course that affords time for socializing with new and old bike friends.

The snow is melting and little pieces of dirt are starting to emerge. This means it’s almost time for mountain bike season to start. Our first event of the 2012 season is a Bike Garage Sale. This will be happening at Icycle Sport from 11:30-2:30 on May 5th.

Similar to last year, people are invited to bring their bike gear to Icycle Sport between 11:30-2:30 to sell.

If you have a bicycle you’d like to sell, but can not be at Icycle for the day, you can drop off your bike between 10:00-11:30 at Icycle Sport and it will be placed on the floor for you. This will be done at your own risk and it must be picked up by 2:30 pm, or it will be donated to a local organization.

If you are interested in selling bike gear (parts, trainers, speedometers, tires, wheels, etc…); you will need to stay with your gear. We will have tables that can be used for set up.

We ask that all sellers donate 10% of their sales to VeloNorth and CMBC to be used for 2012 bicycle events.

It’s winter in Whitehorse – but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy some biking. On December 18th, 2011 at Magnusson Ski Trails (up the Grey Mtn Road), we’ll have the 1st Annual 5+ Hours of Light Fat Tire Festival. This lap race will start with sun at 10:07; and end as it sets at 3:47 pm.

Solos and teams are welcome. If you don’t have a fat bike, you can either join a team with one OR try riding a skinny tired bike. Icycle will also be bringing Surly Pugsley’s to demo, so here’s your chance to check it out. For now, coordinate teams using the Facebook Event: http://www.facebook.com/events/186272631466177/ . If we develop anything more sophisticated, we’ll let you know.

Same rules as 24 Hours of Light – NO ARTIFICIAL LIGHTS!!!

Cost of the event is $20/person. Any money made will go to more CMBC events.
