July 16-17 Trail Warnings!

This weekend the Yukon Orienteering Club is hosting the Western Canadian Orienteering championships.   They will be using trails in the Grey Mountain and Long Lake areas for this event.  This event won’t result in any trail closures, it will mean more than 200 runners in some common biking areas.  So….if you see a bunch of folks running around with maps – don’t worry, they aren’t lost!  Give them a friendly hello and the right of way while they compete in this important event.

The events will take place on Saturday, July 16 from 10-2:00 pm starting from Magnusson Parking Lot; and Sunday, July 17th at Hospital Ridge from 10:00-4:00 pm.

Yukon Orienteering has provided us a map showing the general areas.  On Saturday they’ll be using the zone South of the Hospital.  It looks like the trails that could be affected are: Boogaloos, El Camino, Yellow Brick, Magnusson ski trails, Your/Our/My Trail, Cousins Connector, Blues Brothers and Lakes Trails.

On Sunday, they’ll be using the area North of the Hospital, which could include Hospital Ridge, Long Lake Trail, Hilarious, Booby Trap, Broken Truck and Boogaloo Lakes.

Bikes and … guns?

Biathlon Yukon is reaching out to CMBC mountain bikers, and that’s a good thing! A few of us took part in a mountain bike biathlon race (after careful orientation on the rifles and range) this past Monday. I think it’s safe to say we all had an awesome time, including those of us who’d never been anywhere near a gun before. So much fun, we’re doing it again!

Monday, July 18 will be shooting lessons and practice. We strongly suggest you attend if you’re considering joining any future races. Pre-registration is required: e-mail oliver.maryjane@gmail. com. Cost is $5 for a box of bullets.

The next race will take place on Monday, July 25. Pre-registration required (to same e-mail) and cost is $2. Can’t beat that!

Biathlon Yukon is also looking for volunteers to help at these events – no experience required! Contact Mary Jane Oliver if you’re interested in learning more about biathlon while helping out: oliver.maryjane@gmail. com.

Location is the biathlon range on Grey Mountain Road (or upper magnusson parking lot on this map: http://bit.ly/pbf31e).

***For safety reasons, please come to the shooting practice on July 18 if you hope to join the race and are new to this.

This is not us, but it will give you a taste of the experience: Terrace, BC bike biathlon video.

This is us: Jenn’s blog post about Bike Biathlon. Thanks for documenting the fun, Jenn!

(Feel free to request other skills when you register.) Bring your tools with you if you have them: allen keys, chain breaker, small screwdrivers.

Location: Icycle Sport, 9002 Quartz Road

Date: July 19, 2011

***UPDATE: SIGN UP QUICKLY – ONLY THREE SPOTS LEFT!

24 Hours of Light – Final Lap Count

Here are final lap counts.  I will try to figure out how to get them onto the 24 Hours of Light site, but will probably fail.  There is a link to PICASA on the right side of this page – that will take you to lots of nifty photos courtesy of Paul Gowdie.  Here it is for all of you too lazy to look: http://picasaweb.google.com/cmbc.yukon

If you have other pics to share of the event, the Facebook page is a nice place to link images.

Also – if you disagree with the lap count, send an e-mail.  These laps are taken off hundreds of pages of handwritten times, taken by dedicated volunteers in the wee hours of the morning.  If there’s a mistake, I’ll try to figure it out and fix it; but I probably won’t do any investigating until a rainy no-ride day!

Wanna know what’s happening?

This post is just a quick reminder of how to get information about what’s happening with CMBC.  We have a Facebook User Group called “CMBC Yukon”.  To become a member, search for us in Facebook.  This is a great group for sharing informal information and posting picture albums.

We also have this website.  You can bookmark it, or add it to a reader feed.  If you want to get a direct e-mail every time we post subscribe by filling out your e-mail in the little “subscribe” box to the right.  PLEASE BE WARNED:  Many e-mail accounts initially recognize the automatic emails as spam.  You’ll have to search your junk/spam e-mail to make sure that you are indeed receiving e-mails into your inbox.

We are trying to add more folders and if you look up, you’ll see there’s an Event Calendar, Twoonie Race menu and more.  These menus have important information about upcoming events.

We have your long weekend planned!

The Teslin Midnight Sun Showdown Downhill race is all about biking fun under the Midnight Sun. Not many places can one bike down a Mountain at the late hours of the night with natural daylight. This event is for anyone looking for a unique experience.

When: July 2nd, 2011 racing starts at 1900
Where: Teslin, Yukon (Km 1250 of the Alaska Highway – across Teslin cottage lots)
Cost: The cost is only $5 but you must be a CMBC member to race. We will be taking memberships on race day.

The race will take place on a newly constructed trail called “Moose Tracks”. This trail can be considered a beginner intermediate type trail. This 5km trail winds down the local hills with natural flow and beautiful lake views. You don’t need a “big bike” for this trail.

The race will offer different categories to suite your riding style and skill level. Following the race there will be a BBQ near the finish line. The guys at Cove Bikes have already offered up some great prizes.

Teslin has several different campgrounds available if you wish to camp for the night.

The goal of this event is to bring mountain bike enthusiast to our newly constructed Teslin trail network. It has been said Teslin has one of the best freeride trails with “Honey Drop” in the Yukon. So why not come on out for a day of riding with some racing fun in the evening. The trails are shuttle access and the road is in great condition, there will be some shuttle vehicles out there for the weekend to help as well.

Last Intermediate Skills Clinic to Be Held at Skills Park!

We’re stoked to have Kate White as our guest instructor this week! Kate will help us slay those dragons at the skills park, which has something for all skill levels.

***New meeting location***: Dirt ‘N’ Soul skills park, near the Mt. Mac recreation centre. (Take Sumanik Drive toward the wax room/curling club, but veer left after the bridge. You’ll see the dirt jump park on your left.)

Bring bug spray – those mosquitos are killers right now at Mt. Mac.

This fun evening will bring the workshop to a close.

Workshop sessions are offered on Monday evenings throughout June for intermediate mountain bikers who would like to gain some confidence on descents and turns. No need to register; just show up with your bike, helmet, and layers to keep warm.
Adults only; CMBC membership required (we’ll be there to register you so please bring $40 fee if you haven’t yet registered)
***This workshop is a series that will build each week on the skills learned in previous weeks.

p.s. If Kate does her job right you should be able to do this by the end of the evening:

p.p.s. Just kidding about that last part.

Dry Tri Is Back!

Don’t call it a comeback…

The DT has been here for years — Rockin’ our peers and puttin’ suckas in fear.

Fear of a dry nation? Come and throw-down as an individual or on a team in the triathlon where the only water is from your tears of joy raining down like a MON-soon (listen to the bass go BOOM) as you run, then ride, then run again on the tasty trails around the Takhini Hotsprings.

Mama said knock you OUT with a dope post-race after-party: fresh BBQ treats*, fly draw-prizes, frothy beverages, and always a few surprises.

Believe the hype! How do we put on such a dope event for so cheap? It’s tricky.

* Respect the environment, yo! Keep it old school by bringing your own cup/plate/cutlery.

You down with DT?

more info call 668.4699
Register at Icycle Sport!!

Don’t you dare stare, you betta MOVE because only the first 30 registered get some sweet Dry Tri BLING.

Much love and respect to our homies at Icycle Sport, Yukon Brewing Co., The Deli, Bean North and Midnight Sun Coffee Roasters. We love y’all.

p.s. I *so* didn’t write this text – blame Monika for the 90s revival.
