DIRT GIRLS SUMMER UPDATE
This year’s Dirt Girls has been one of our most successful seasons to date! Dirt Girls has dominated the Whitehorse trails (and parking lots!) on Tuesday nights, with numbers sometimes pushing 50 participants. We’ve had great participation from our veteran crew and continue to welcome new riders at every ride. It’s been wonderful to see the progression of our newbies.
This year we’ve had some fun additions to our weekly ride with Marisa from Summit Yoga leading a post ride yoga session in July. We hope to make this a regular occurrence. Keep up to date on rides through the Dirt Girls Facebook Group.
We started August off strong with a day trip to Carcross to shuttle up and enjoy the down tracks on Montana Mountain. We popped into Icycle at Carcross Commons and picked up some cute custom socks with a donation to Single Track to Success. Thank you for all the hard work that goes into improving the Carcross trails!
The season is far from over for Dirt Girls and we are looking forward to a Sima night on August 13 and we’ll keep our Tuesday nights on track until the snow flies. Speaking of snow, Snow Girls will be happening again this winter!
Of course none of this would be possible without the generous donation from our Dirt Girls sponsor, Medicine Chest. Huge thank you goes out to our volunteer ride leaders and organizers who bring their humour, creativity and their mad skills to every ride.
NEW TRAILS IN PROGRESS!
The city approved two trail applications in July: the Amanda Taylor Memorial Trail and an as-yet-unnamed flow/jump trail on Grey Mountain near the Magnusson parking lot.
The Amanda Taylor Memorial trail will start on Reimer Reason and end on Bouncing Bunny, enhancing the trail network at Mount Mac. The inaugural volunteer trail day with refreshments and prizes will be held on August 25th from 5:30-8:30. Check the website closer to the date for meet-up details.
The first trail day on the new flow/jump trail on Grey Mountain was August 10th. We focused on cleaning up some of the legacy features and adding some new tread to separate the exit from Magnusson Green. There will be more trail days to come, as it will take a significant amount of volunteer hours to get this trail in good riding shape.
A climb-specific option has been added to Boogaloo Heights. Eventually, we plan to build a drop on the downhill section that this new trail bypasses. The new jump trail will start on Boogaloo Heights just above the new climb trail. The switchbacks on the climb trail may require some more work next season as they may be a little tight for snow machine grooming. We will see how it goes this winter and make modifications in 2026.
Ollie’s trail, which runs along Grey Mountain Road from the base of RIP (opposite side of the road) to the Magnusson lot, got a bit more buffing work on July 28. While it has been rideable for most of the season, it is still considered a work in progress, and some touch-ups will happen in 2026. This trail help keeps our four-legged trail buddies and little tikes safely off the road.
Lastly, a new drop has been built and opened on Rock Lobster. Thanks to Rob McConnell who designed and built this feature, contributing significant volunteer hours to the riding community.
Thanks to all those who have come out to help improve our rider experience so far this year.
TRAIL DAYS – YOUR CHANCE TO GIVE BACK
This summer, through our local sponsors, we’ve distributed 19 gift cards to Trail Day participants – totaling $760 in value to be spent at various local businesses in town.
Our next trail day is on Grey Mountain – the new jump/flow trail near the Magnusson lot. Come help us with this fun new trail on August 10th from 2-5pm, sponsored by Baked!
There are fun new trails in progress, and lots of work needed to get them riding-ready – you can contribute to the riding community by joining us at one (or more!) of the upcoming trail days. All trail days have snacks and drinks in progress, and prizes to be won. A reminder that if you attend 2 or more trail nights, you earn a Yukon Brewing repeat trail workers appreciation coupon (10% off)! Ask your trail leader for the coupon.
